Last week Stockport Council held its Annual Council Meeting recently to determine who would lead the Council for the coming year. Stockport uses the Strong Leader and Cabinet model and this year a new leader had to be elected.
Two candidates put themselves forward for election: former Council Leader Cllr. Elise Wilson and Cllr. Mark Hunter for the Liberal Democrats.
After this year’s local elections, the Liberal Democrats became the single largest Group on the Council pulling 3 seats clear of the Labour Group.
Cllr. Mark Hunter won the Leadership contest by 31 votes to 25 votes for Cllr. Elise Wilson
Stockport Conservative Group remain the second largest opposition group on the Council and have pledged to hold the new administration to account.
Cllr. Mike Hurleston, Conservative Group Leader said -
“Stockport Conservative Group will continue to provide a strong and robust opposition. The Liberal Democrats have made a lot of promises and commitments to residents in opposition. Now is not a time for words, it’s a time for action. The Conservative Group will ensure that we hold them to account.”
