Councillor John McGahan has gone on record calling for a consultation - rather than a pre-consultation - over proposals to move Queensgate Primary School from Bramhall to Woodford.
In an email to Stockport Council, Councillor McGahan said the following:
Why do the Council require a pre consultation? Surely the requirement is to have a consultation!
The question to ask at consultation is I would suggest very simple
1) do you want Queensgate school to remain on its current site and a new school in addition to be opened in Woodford
Or
2) do you want Queensgate school to close and be replaced by a new school to be opened in Woodford
I would respectfully suggest you have already seen the answer and I would refer you to the petition which now has in excess of 800 signatures. If this is to be ignored what price local democracy?
The consultation could be launched immediately and that would provide ample time for parents to be in a position to apply for school places in September 2021 for commencement at school in September 2022. You will appreciate this is a highly stressful and emotive issue for parents, grandparents and children as well as local residents, who have yet to have children, who have moved to the area to specifically take advantage of excellent LOCAL schools.
As Councillor McGahan notes, the lengthy process of pre-consultations, then consultations, could be harmful to parents seeking to apply for school placements in the next few months.
The Cheadle Conservative Association, through Councillor McGahan and the campaign to Save Queensgate, has now collected the signatures of over 800 residents concerned about the proposed move.
